What is the pelvic floor?
The pelvic floor is the set of muscles and ligaments that lines the lower part of the pelvis.
What are the functions of the pelvic floor?
Continence: it is responsible for containing urine, feces and gases.
Support: both for the general posture and for the proper positioning of the pelvic organs that are the bladder, uterus and rectum and thus guarantee their correct functioning.
Reproductive: it is a very important musculature at the time of delivery.
Sexual: since we find the sexual organs.
How does the pelvic floor relate to posture?
The pelvic floor does not work independently as it is related to many other structures that are important for its function. To understand this, it is necessary to talk about the abdominal cavity and compare it to a cylinder. In this cylinder, the base would be the pelvic floor, the upper part would be the diaphragm and the walls would be the abdominal muscles, the spine and the lumbar muscles. Within this cylinder or abdominal cavity we find the pelvic organs.
Any malfunction in an element of the abdominal cavity, affects the rest of the structures, with which, for a good functioning of the pelvic floor it is necessary that all the structures that make up the abdominal cavity are in good condition and position since in this way the pressures that are produced in its interior may be well distributed and supported.
